Marinus Heijl

The Dutch painter Marinus Heijl learned to be an artist at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. In addition to being a painter, he was also active as an etcher, lithographer and draftsman. His teacher at the academy was H.D. Kruseman van Elten. During his travels to Germany and Switzerland, among other places, he was probably inspired by the wooded and mountainous landscapes that characterize his paintings. Heijl was influenced by the Hague School and collaborated for some time with Anton Mauve. Contemporaries greatly appreciated Heijl’s paintings. From 1871 he was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, within which he would also hold a board position.
