Petrus Marius Brouwer owes his fame mainly to the fact that he was a student of Andreas Schelfhout when he lived in The Hague in the period 1843-1847. Brouwer received thorough instruction from his teacher, which resulted in beautiful, romantic summer landscapes, ice scenes and beach and forest views, often painted on panel. He also painted and drew animal scenes. Not much is known about the artist’s life. Although he regularly exhibited at the Exhibitions of Living Masters, painting was probably not his profession. It is known that he was mayor of Zwijndrecht from 1866 to 1877.
