Self-taught David Schulman was one of the Laren School’s most gifted painters. In the Gooi region he drew and painted landscapes and village scenes in the snow, bathed in a vivid, golden orange glow. He also regularly visited the Zuiderzee region to paint its fishing villages and drew inspiration from the lively bustle of the Loosdrecht Lakes area. Schulman’s work was already much esteemed during his lifetime. He received many prizes and was the driving force behind artist societies like The Ten, Laren-Blaricum and the Gooi Society of Painters. At the age of 68 he became chairman of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.
This painting is inspired by a painting of Piet Mondriaan, ca. 1905.
