annotation: Annotation on former back cover: 'Jan Sluijters, Modelstudie 1943. Deze tekening is er één uit een serie van drie van hetzelfde model in verschillende houdingen. Wegens de schaarste aan goed tekenpapier in de oorlog wordt de achterkant van een vel gebruikt, waarop door ondergetekende (2e zoon van de schilder) een constructie voor een proefwerk beschrijvende meetkunde was gemaakt. De tekeningen hebben later als materiaal gediend voor de composiie van een groot schilderij ''Liggend naakt op zwarte doek'' 1946 (zie boek J.S. door J.Juffermans en N. Bakker, blz. 86 rechtsonder. Jan Sluijters along with Leo Gestel and Piet Mondrian belongs to the first early modernists. He trained at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie. He then moved to Paris (1904-1907) where his introduction to the work of Van Gogh, Cézanne and the Fauves, including Gauguin, led to him developing an entirely new visual idiom. Sluijters sought to express powerful inner feelings in his work by changing visible forms and applying an exuberant, non-realistic use of colour. Landscapes only occur in his earlier work: later he had a distinct preference for still-lifes, nudes and portraits.
