Petrus Gerardus Vertin
The Hague 1819-1893
A view of the Nieuwe Gracht, corner Jansstraat, Haarlem, oil on panel 23.6 x 20.8 cm, signed l.r.
provenance: art gallery François Buffa & Fils, Amsterdam, inv.nr. 627.
Petrus Gerardus Vertin received his training at the academy in The Hague, which means that his work is considered part of The Hague Romanticism. He painted Dutch cityscapes and streets in summer and winter. He occasionally had these upholstered by his friends Charles Rochussen, J.F. Hoppenbrouwers and S.L. Verveer. Sometimes his work is topographical, but mostly Vertin opted for fantasy images. In his winter views he paid a lot of attention to the reflection of light on snow-covered roofs, window frames and sidewalks.
