'Willem' Anthonie van Deventer

The Hague 1824-1893
Shipping off the coast, watercolour on paper 35.6 x 58.5 cm, signed l.l.

provenance: Royal Collections; legacy of HRH Princess Juliana (1909-2004), Queen of the Netherlands from 1948 to 1980.

Willem van Deventer received his first painting lessons from his uncle Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen. From 1843 to 1846 he attended the Hague Drawing Academy, where the romantic marine painters Sam Verveer and Antonie Waldorp also taught. They may have played a role in the young painter’s choice to specialize in river and seascapes. This watercolor probably comes from the collection of Willem III. He actively collected watercolors by (Hague) contemporaries and it is known that he also bought work by W.A. Van Deventer.
