Théresia van der Pant is best known as a sculptor, and as such is one of the most important Dutch post-war artists. Animals were her favourite subject, rendered in an abstracted figurative form in bronze or stone. Van der Pant studied at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie, where she would later be a teacher, and made a number of study trips, including to Israel and Italy. She was awarded many times, including the Prix de Rome (1953) and the Judith Leyster Prize (1987). She is less known as a draughtswoman, although she made countless sketches and drawings. This abstract pastel from the 80s testifies to that relatively unknown creative side of Van der Pant.
